How to Hire A Lawyer in Utah

Legal matters in Utah require expertise that a skilled professional attorney is best to handle.  We understand; the thought of hiring a lawyer probably seems scary and overwhelming, but rest assured that you are dealing with professionals whose job it is to work hard on your behalf.  Remember, lawyers, are here to work for you and to win your case.  It’s important to remember that finding the best lawyers in Utah to act on your behalf can mean the difference between a legal win, or an unfortunate loss.   When searching for, or hiring a lawyer, remember the “4 Cs”

  1. Credentials: Firstly, make sure that the lawyer you plan to hire is an accredited legal professional and that they are practicing in the field of law in which they are experienced.
  2. Cost:  It’s no surprise that legal experience and talent will cost you more – just like any industry.  However, ask around to see what a few lawyers will charge to get an idea of an average price for services.  Then, decide for yourself what the extra experience is worth to you.
  3. Comfort: Interview a few lawyers/attorneys and see who you feel the most comfortable with.   Remember, you will be forming an attorney/client “relationship” and personalities and trust are paramount.
  4. City: Also consider that you will likely be meeting face to face with your lawyer; so hire one that is easy to travel to.  After all, that is the point of USLawyersNearMe!

Within Utah there is a state supreme court, a federal district court, and trial courts.  Court Links are below:

It’s interesting to note that the vast majority of cases will be held in front of a District Court, then depending on the outcome, the case can be elevated to higher courts.  In the end,  the Supreme Court is considered the highest authority.

Trial Courts

District Courts

The Utah District Courts are general jurisdiction courts.  In Utah, they have exclusive jurisdiction over civil disputes as well as some felonies and misdemeanors. The district courts also hear domestic violence, small claims, probate, and justice court appeals cases.

Juvenile courts

The Juvenile Courts see cases involving minors who violate federal, state, or municipal laws. They also have jurisdiction in family matters of abuse of a minor, neglect, or dependency.

Justice courts

“Justice courts have the authority to deal with class B and C misdemeanors, violations of ordinances, small claims and infractions committed within their territorial jurisdiction. Jurisdictions are determined by the boundaries of local government entities such as cities or counties, which hire the judges.”  (UTcourts.gov)
