There are three federal district courts, a superior court, a commonwealth court, trial courts with both general and limited jurisdiction, the state supreme court, and three federal district courts in Pennsylvania.  Within the Pennsylvania judicial branch, there are various levels of courts; these are:

• City Courts
• District Courts
• Circuit Courts
• Pennsylvania Court of Appeals
• Pennsylvania Supreme Court

It’s interesting to note that the vast majority of cases will be held in front of a District Court, then depending on the outcome, the case can be elevated to higher courts.  In the end,  the Supreme Court is considered the highest authority. 

Pennsylvania’s two statewide intermediate appellate courts are the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court, and the Pennsylvania Superior Court. In 1895, the supreme court was founded; it examines the majority of appeals from the common pleas courts in the 67 counties of the state in both civil and criminal cases.

Trial courts:

Court of common pleas

The Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas is the name of the main courts in the state. Although summary offenses, petty claims, and landlord-tenant disputes can be handled in minor courts in Pennsylvania, the Courts of Common Pleas are the main courts. There are 60 judicial districts that make up these courts.

Magisterial districts

Small claims, landlord-tenant disputes, traffic violations, and minor criminal offenses are all handled by the Pennsylvania Magisterial Districts,

Philadelphia municipal court

The Philadelphia Municipal Court is a minor court in Pennsylvania that deals with municipal cases. 

Pittsburgh municipal court is a minor court in Pennsylvania that deals with municipal cases.
